Almost all of us have received an invitation - an indication of an enjoyable event on the horizon. Whether a wedding, birthday, or anniversary, an invitation announces anticipated occasions to join in on the celebration of milestones.

Today I’d like to extend an invitation to you. Though this invitation is not for a wedding or birthday party, it is of no less importance. Beginning January 5th of 2025, we as a church are setting aside 21 days of prayer, concluding with a week of prayer and fasting. I invite you all to join us in this occasion, and consider now how you can participate.

21 Days

It is no secret that we need the strength and power of the Lord in every area of our lives. As we humble ourselves through prayer and fasting, we position ourselves to receive the very help we need.

“Draw near to me, and I will draw near to you” is a powerful promise found in scripture. What better way for us to draw near to God than through sincere and heartfelt prayer? Prayer with fasting, and the power of corporate agreement opens the door for the words of our Lord being fulfilled in our midst. “Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven” (Matthew 18:19).

In Psalm 63, we find David addressing the Lord, “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you, my soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you as in a dry and weary land where there is no water”. I am struck by the fervency of David’s cry here - his soul thirsts, his flesh faints. He compares his desire for God with the most basic needs of human life, recognizing that his need for God was just as real and intense as his need for food and water.

Here I ask myself some questions, and extend that same queries to you:

  • How would I describe my need for the Lord?
  • Am I truly thirsty for God?
  • Do I hunger deep in my spirit for Him?

Answers to these questions can be an indication to our spiritual health.

Psalm 63 begins with the phrase “earnestly I seek you”. This seeking is deliberate and intentional. Prayer provides us with the opportunity to seek the Lord. Through prayer, like the thirsty man who finds water, we find Him to be the only one who can satisfy the longings of our soul.

You don’t need to wait until January to respond to this invitation. You can seek Him through heartfelt, sincere prayer today. Seeking Him today will only increase your hunger for Him - in community groups, families, prayer walks, and nights of worship.

Let us join together to seek after our glorious God and Savior!
