What Does God Want with Your Money?
By Jay Lewis
The messages that exist about money are endless. As followers of Christ, we must ask the question: What does the Bible say about money? How we use our money reflects our walk with Christ and our identity in Him - that’s the key.
Before Christ, the Bible calls us enemies of God. Imagine a government funding its enemy in a time of war… that would be unthinkable. As slaves of sin we served selfish desires, trusted in wealth, and lived as orphans apart from Him. But thanks be to God, we have been redeemed through Christ and our identities have changed! Our behavior, and how we handle our money, should reflect this transformation. As our behaviors of jealousy, stealing, and adultery are replaced with love and righteousness, so too should our approach to money be one that reflects our new lives in Christ.
Money is a tool that can help us grow in our love for God, and for others. Trusting His provision deepens our faith, builds contentment, and helps us see His care. As the Bible reminds us, God is the one “who richly provides us with everything to enjoy” (1 Timothy 6:17). When we prioritize giving over accumulating, we serve God by acting as stewards of His blessings, and showing love like He did. “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).
Ultimately, God wants our hearts. As He conforms us to the image of Christ, He helps us walk faithfully in our new, redeemed identity. He helps us walk faithfully in our new, redeemed identity. Through our approach to finances, we not only believe in God’s care and provision, but we get to experience it in real and tangible ways. How can the way you handle money deepen your relationship with Christ and reflect His character?
Stay faithful, friends of God!
