Matthew 1 - Joseph, Son of David
Preacher: Shane Kohout Series: The Characters of Christmas Scripture: Matthew 1:18–25
Why does Joseph matter in the Christmas story, and how does his obedience help us understand who Jesus is?
In this Advent message, Pastor Shane invites us to slow down and see Joseph with fresh eyes. Though often overlooked in the Christmas story, Joseph plays a vital role in revealing the faithfulness and purpose of God. Scripture calls him “son of David,” a title that ties him to God’s ancient promise of a King whose throne would last forever. Joseph may have seemed ordinary to his neighbors, but heaven saw him differently. Through Joseph’s obedience, Jesus is embraced into the royal line of David, fulfilling what God declared generations before.
Pastor Shane walks through Matthew 1 to show how Joseph models quiet, courageous righteousness. He faced a painful and confusing situation, yet he trusted the word of the Lord and acted without delay. Joseph chose to bear with Mary what others would have counted as shame, giving us a picture of the One who would come and bear our shame at the cross. The message encourages us to see how Joseph’s faith points to Christ, the greater Son of David who saves His people from their sins and welcomes us into God’s family.
This sermon helps listeners recognize the beauty of God’s promises kept, the power of obedience shaped by faith, and the compassion of Jesus who carries what we cannot.
