Joshua 4 - Built to Remember
Preacher: Chris Jessee Series: Joshua: People of God's Purpose Topic: Sunday Sermons Scripture: Joshua 4:1–24
How can I remember what God has done when life gets hard and I start to forget?
In Joshua 4, God tells Israel to build a visible reminder after He brings them safely through the Jordan River. Twelve stones are carried from the riverbed and stacked at Gilgal so future generations will ask, “What do those stones mean to you?” In “Built to Remember,” Pastor Chris Jessee shows how God’s rescue is meant to be remembered together, spoken out loud, and lived out in everyday faithfulness. When life gets noisy or hard, we tend to remember what hurt us faster than we remember what helped us. Joshua 4 meets that weakness with God’s kindness: He gives His people practices that keep His mercy in view and His mighty hand on our lips.
This message also points us to the greater deliverance found in Jesus. The stones in Joshua 4 were not an altar for repeated sacrifice. They were a testimony that prompts worship and witness. In the same way, Communion is a remembrance meal that helps forgetful hearts hold tightly to what Christ has finished. God forms a people who remember together so we can live as steady worshipers and clear witnesses wherever God sends us.
Key Takeaways and Application
-
Remember together, not in isolation. God involved every tribe because His rescue forms one people. Your presence strengthens others, and their faith strengthens you.
-
Build reminders that lead to words. God expected children to ask questions, and He gave His people a clear answer. Build simple rhythms that help you tell the story of how the Lord has carried you.
-
Let God’s presence shape careful obedience. The chapter highlights steady obedience after the miracle. God’s help does not remove responsibility. It trains us to walk with integrity when pressure rises.
-
Live so questions rise naturally. God’s rescue becomes God’s people’s mission. As you return to the calendar, commute, classroom, and kitchen, let your life make room for honest questions and clear hope in Christ.
-
Look to Jesus as the greater deliverer. God made a way through the waters for Israel. Jesus is the way into life with God, and Communion keeps His finished work in front of us.
