Joshua 8:1-29 - After Failure, Forward

Preacher: Chris Jessee Series: Joshua: People of God's Purpose Topic: Sunday Sermons Scripture: Joshua 8:1–35

How does God help you move forward after failure?

In Joshua 8:1–29, Pastor Chris Jessee walks through a passage for anyone who knows what it feels like to carry failure into the next step. Israel’s defeat at Ai in Joshua 7 exposed hidden sin in the camp, but Joshua 8 shows what happens after sin is brought into the light and dealt with before God. The Lord speaks to Joshua again, leads his people with clarity, and gives the victory they could not secure on their own.

On Palm Sunday, this message also points us to the true King. Joshua 8 ends with judgment on a guilty king, but Palm Sunday leads us to Jesus, the sinless King who moved toward Jerusalem and the cross on purpose. He bore the curse sinners deserve so that those who trust him can be forgiven, restored, and led forward in grace.

Key Takeaways

  • God does not leave his people on the ground after failure. He speaks to them, restores them, and calls them forward.
  • Hidden sin is serious because God is holy. What is concealed from others is never hidden from him.
  • Obedience often looks patient, careful, and humble. God’s people are called to trust him in the next faithful step, even when the way forward feels slow or costly.
  • Victory never comes from human effort alone. Faithful action matters, but Christ is the source of victory.
  • Palm Sunday reminds us that Jesus moved toward judgment willingly. He is the true King who bore the curse for sinners and now leads his people by his Spirit.
