Joshua 11 - When God Fights for Rest

Preacher: Chris Jessee Series: Joshua: People of God's Purpose Topic: Sunday Sermons Scripture: Joshua 11:1–23

What does Joshua 11 teach us about trusting God when life feels overwhelming and we need rest?

In Joshua 11, Israel faces an overwhelming enemy: kings, armies, horses, and chariots gathered against them. Fear counts the army, but faith hears the voice of the Lord. In this message from our series, Joshua: People of God’s Promise, Pastor Chris Jessee shows how God speaks courage to His people, calls them to trust and obey, and leads them toward the rest only He can give.

This is a hard passage filled with battle, judgment, obedience, and rest. It reminds us that God’s holiness takes sin seriously, and it also keeps us from misunderstanding the church’s mission. Christians do not continue Joshua’s conquest with the sword. Jesus sends His church with the gospel. We love our enemies, pray for those who persecute us, proclaim Christ, and fight sin by the power of the Spirit.

Joshua 11 ends with the land having rest from war, but that rest was never final. Joshua points us to Jesus, the greater Joshua, who wins peace through His death and resurrection. At the cross, God’s judgment fell on Christ so sinners could be welcomed by grace. In His resurrection and reign, Jesus gives His people hope that evil, sin, fear, grief, and death will not have the final word.

Key Takeaways

  • Faith does not pretend the battle is small. Faith listens for the Lord’s voice above the fear.
  • Courage is confidence in God expressed through obedience.
  • God strips away false security so we learn to trust Him more deeply.
  • Holiness refuses peace with sin because Christ has made us His own.
  • The church’s mission is gospel witness, Spirit-empowered repentance, love, prayer, and disciple-making.
  • Joshua’s rest points forward to the greater rest Jesus secures for His people.
  • Jesus does not merely inspire rest. He won it through His finished work.
